Infonetics Study Finds 81 Percent of Mobile Operators Are Using EDGE, HSPA+ to Improve User Experience on the Road to LTE Campbell, CALIFORNIA (May 8, 2015)-Technology market research firm Infonetics Research, now part of IHS Inc. (NYSE: IHS), conducted in-depth surveys with operators worldwide that operate 3GPP networks and found that 81 percent are running EDGE and fast HSPA+ to enable higher download speeds and support new features and technologies as they move along the LTE roadmap. "Enabling new services and enhancing the user experience is the major theme that resonates across the data we collected from service providers taking part in our IP RAN study this year," said Stéphane Téral, research director for mobile infrastructure and carrier economics at Infonetics Research, now part of IHS.
"A large majority of mobile operators worldwide remain focused on getting more and more output out from their existing 3GPP assets through evolutionary steps at a time of great constraint on every single mobile network in the world," Téral said.
Infonetics' 2015 IP RAN and 3GPP Strategies and Vendor Leadership: Global Service Provider Survey analyzes how and why mobile operators plan to get as much out of their existing 3GPP network assets as possible through evolutionary steps, versus jumping straight to LTE. IP RAN AND 3GPP SURVEY HIGHLIGHTS
- Respondent operators who don't have EDGE don't see the need for it because they jumped straight to W-CDMA/HSPA and/or LTE
- 57 percent of operators surveyed have a single IP RAN up and running, while 5 percent currently have a full IP RAN
- For the first time, Infonetics asked survey participants about NFV timing and C-RAN deployment in the RAN and found no real traction through 2017
- When it comes to RAN manufacturers, Ericsson, Huawei and Nokia Networks dominate in terms of respondents' installed base and evaluation for future purchases as well as perceived leading RAN suppliers
