Packet-Optical Transport Deployments Slower Than Anticipated Cambridge, MASSACHUSETTS (May 27, 2015)- IHS (NYSE: IHS) conducted an in-depth study with service providers worldwide about their packet-optical strategies and found that 78 percent have already deployed packet-optical transport systems (P-OTS) or plan to by the end of 2016, a drop of 8 percentage points compared to a year ago. "Compared with results from last year, overall enthusiasm for P-OTS waned a little in our latest packet-optical survey, with responses for the reasons behind deploying P-OTS and the expected number of nodes using this functionality sliding a little," said Andrew Schmitt, research director for carrier transport networking at IHS.
"The increased focus on datacenter interconnect and the virtualized functions expected to reside within may be reducing the pressure to use technologies like P-OTS to converge multiple networks," Schmitt said. PACKET-OPTICAL SURVEY HIGHLIGHTS
- Respondents' percentage of installed P-OTS equipment is about the same as it was in 2014, indicating that little incremental expansion took place in the past 12 months, and deployment is taking place slower than last year's survey participants anticipated
- Carriers participating in the survey still feel strongly that P-OTS equipment reduces the complexity of the network, and more feel the right equipment is now available
- Almost all respondents have plans to deploy transport software-defined networking (SDN), but over half don't see this taking place until 2017 or later
